Energy Market Sector Leader

We are a national environmental consulting firm, leading in the areas of soil, groundwater, and contaminated sediment remediation; environmental planning and permitting; ecosystem and habitat restoration; and environmental engineering for coastal areas, waterfronts and communities along waterways. With more than 500 people across 30 offices, we are known for our ability to develop decades long relationships with our clients to deliver deep technical expertise in many critical markets, for clients in the Energy, Industrial, Ports & Harbors, Federal, and State & Local government sectors. Over the next five years, we plan to grow the Energy market substantially in the areas of Green and Renewable Energy (solar, wind, hydro, battery storage, carbon (CO2) capture/utilization/storage, hydrogen and blue ammonia, and related areas).

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our team as the Energy Market Sector Leader (MSL). In this pivotal role, this individual will be the driving force behind the conception, development, and execution of innovative strategies aimed at propelling the growth and expansion of our work with Utilities, Oil & Gas, and related Energy clients. With a primary focus on business development through comprehensive strategy development and implementation, the Energy MSL will intricately weave their deep understanding of market trends, drivers, and client needs into actionable plans that foster business development and revenue growth.


The successful candidate will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of the complex drivers and trends for Energy clients to galvanize, mentor, and lead our teams. They will be adept at navigating the complex landscape of the Energy sector, translating insights into lucrative opportunities and cementing our position as a leader in the field.


Responsibilities that underscore this role include the formulation and execution of market-specific strategies, spearheading business development initiatives, providing overarching leadership to our technical business development teams and developing and growing ours brand in the marketplace through industry participation and thought leadership activities. The Energy MSL will be tasked with the expansion of the market on multiple fronts, negotiating contracts, determining pricing structures, and serving as the primary executive for client interactions. By establishing and meeting ambitious sales, revenue, and profit goals, they will play a crucial role in not only the growth of the Energy sector but the overarching success and innovation ethos.

The Energy Market Sector is expected to secure ~$23M in sales in 2023 and is projecting to grow this area of the business to $50-$60M in sales by the end of 2026. This role reports to the Chief Strategy Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Drive top line revenue and sales growth through the creation and execution of robust strategic plans, including identification of key clients, Client Capture Plans, leading the development of submarkets within Energy, forecasting and analytics to identify potential growth areas and trends. Establish sales, revenue, and profit goals for the overall market and is measured against the success of achieving these goals.
  • Team Leadership: Cultivate a high-performance culture by empowering and developing the team, fostering innovation, and promoting collaborative problem-solving. Provide overall leadership and direction to business development and client coordinator personnel and teams. Although there will be a few direct reports to manage (BD Directors), the core of this role requires adeptly leveraging people and resources who are embedded within and primarily report to the Operations division of the business. In the nuanced structure of our "matrix" organization, the Energy MSL’s leadership role is carved out through strategic influence, alignment, and collaboration rather than traditional hierarchical authority.
  • Client Engagement: Enhance and expand client relationships through targeted meetings, industry presentations, development of strategic partnerships/teaming relationships, networking, thought leadership, branding and project leadership/performance, negotiate contracts, and lead strategic positioning discussions including making final go/no-go decisions, determine pricing, and serve as the senior executive for client interaction.
  • Industry Networking: Represent us at industry events, conferences, and forums, enhancing the company’s brand presence and networking to identify business opportunities.
  • Performance Metrics: Monitor and report on the performance metrics, ensuring that strategies align with the company's goals and objectives.
  • Innovation: Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, staying abreast of technological advancements and integrating them into service offerings.

Relevant Experience

  • Prior experience leading a market-sector based business development program, preferably generating sales of at least $30M+ per year.
  • Generated an average project profit of 20% for the market.
  • Possesses strong relationships with Utilities, Oil & Gas and/or government clients with experience in selling environmental and new generation services in one or more client type.
