Job title:  Process Modeling Engineer

Job location: 11007 Nations Ford Rd. Pineville, NC 28134 (relocation offered)

Work Setting: In office setting, M-F

Travel: Attending technical conferences and doing presentations. When a new product is installed (mostly outside of the USA) in a facility, they will be traveling to observe the installation. (Up to 20% is a possibility, currently the travel is lower than that.

 Compensation: $95,000 to $115,000 + 401k match up to 6%, profit sharing, OT eligible, tuition reimbursement, long-term incentive plans

Education / Certifications:  Chemical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering background or preferred. Or related field.

Required Experience: This person would need to be an expert / high command of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics. Must know how to read code. (must be interested in computer modeling of chemical processes / plant simulation)

Preferred Experience: Proficient in Qt, working knowledge of C++.  Proficiency in process flow sheeting programs like AspenPlus is a good indicator of aptitude.

The Process Modeling Engineer will assist in the design & execution of technology development programs and plant process performance analysis. This role will become an expert on the existing proprietary calculation tools and maintain / improve / extend their capability.


  • Understand, maintain, and improve the existing suite of proprietary calculation tools.
  • Develop in depth knowledge of our in-house software.
  • Develop programs in Qt, C++ or MS EXCEL for process modeling and data analysis. The engineer will specify the required calculations and validate the outputs. The coding will be completed by a computer programmer if necessary.
  • Assist in the analysis and development of new flowsheets and equipment designs.
  • Develop gas, water, and solids mass and energy balances.
  • Participate in plant start-ups and plant troubleshooting.
  • Manage the development and implementation of assigned Technology Improvement Program (TIP) activities, New Technology Notices (NTN), and other RTD activities.
  • Design detailed test plans, equipment designs, test procedures, and evaluation methods as required for assigned RTD activities.
  • Document RTD activities through the issuance of the applicable RTD reports (TIP, NTN, etc.).



  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics
  • Proficient in C++ in the Visual Studio development environment, or other applicable environment
  • Ability to define program architecture based on based on the program function / feature requests
  • Ability to generate and maintain documentation and manuals for the programs
  • Ability to perform calculations in the field of Chemical Engineering (e.g.: Heat and Material Balances, fluid dynamics, reactive system calculations)
  • Knowledge of process development covering the range from process modeling/bench scale trials to commercial plant implementation and design
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem solving
  • Ability to set priorities and organize resources to fulfill requirements in a timely manner
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Products Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint


  • Proficient in Qt (or similar GUI development tool)
  • Proficient in Fortran
  • Working knowledge of AspenPlus or similar process modeling software Software development, design, documentation, and revision control

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in chemical, metallurgical, materials, or mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Experience programming in computer / computational modeling of reactive processes and validation of the calculation
  • Minimum 4 years experience in process engineering design, or similar applicable experience

Travel Requirements:

  • 5% to 25% International and Domestic to conferences, meetings, and industrial plant sites

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to move around inside and outside of the facility including climbing stairs
  • Able to reach above shoulders and to lift 20 lb.
  • Ability to move around a project site, including climbing structures
