Job title:  Research Engineer 

Job location: 11007 Nations Ford Rd. Pineville, NC 28134 (relocation offered)

Work Setting: In office setting, M-F

Travel: Attending technical conferences and doing presentations. When a new product is installed (mostly outside of the USA) in a facility, they will be traveling to observe the installation. (Up to 20% is a possibility, currently the travel is lower than that.

Compensation: $95,000 to $115,000 + 401k match up to 6%, profit sharing, OT eligible, tuition reimbursement, long-term incentive plans

Education / Certifications:  Chemical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering background preferred. Or related field of study.

Required Experience: Understanding of plant design and system engineering and plant engineering sequences (ie: which engineering deliverables are required first in the project and the normal sequence to control quality and scheduled). Would need to be able to create piping and instrumentation diagrams, process flow diagrams, heat & material balances, analyze laboratory and pilot scale data for the purpose of scale-up to commercial scale designs

The Research Engineer executes programs for the development of new ironmaking and melting technologies and processes. This role will develop and complete experimental studies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Work with multi-disciplinary groups to implement assigned projects and test work.


  • Manage the development and implementation of assigned Technology Improvement Program (TIP) activities, New Technology Notices (NTN), and other Research & Technology Development (RTD) activities.
  • Design detailed test plans, equipment designs, test procedures, and evaluation methods as required for assigned RTD activities.
  • Document RTD activities through the issuance of the applicable RTD reports (TIP, NTN, etc.)
  • Supervise and execute standard laboratory bench tests.
  • Write procedures for operation of test equipment.
  • Conduct training with other departments to introduce new technologies.
  • Prepare technical and /or marketing papers for delivery to industry via conferences, publications, etc.
  • Prepare presentation materials and give presentations to prospective clients, consultants, partners, etc.



  • Possess a thorough knowledge of direct reduction, ironmaking and steelmaking processes
  • Knowledge of process development covering the range from process modeling/bench scale trials to commercial plant implementation and design
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving
  • Ability to set priorities and organize resources to fulfill requirements in a timely manner
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Products Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint


  • Competent in computer aided engineering tools: chemical engineering software (AspenPlus, Fathom, etc), 3-d modeling software (AutoCAD, Inventor)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or other related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a related field.

Travel Requirements:

  • 5% to 15% International and Domestic to conferences, meetings, and industrial plant sites

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to move around inside and outside of the facility including climbing stairs
  • Able to reach above shoulders and to lift 20 lb.
