Wastewater Technician
Scope:
Responsible for waste treatment operations, chemical maintenance of manufacturing processes, and chemical preventative maintenance on equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains standards of quality effluent as prescribed by SJ/SC WPCP
- Operates a wastewater pre-treatment system and batch treatment system, using metal precipitation and water clarification technologies
- Controls pH, heavy metal concentration, and other specified parameters as required by SJ/SC WPCP and SJ Environmental Enforcement Division Waste Water Discharge Permit
- Properly labels all chemicals, including wastes, as required by DOT, OSHA and US EPA
- Provides service to production areas in the form of chemical additions, chemical bath changes, filter changes, preventative maintenance, and housekeeping
- Performs routine maintenance tasks as required to assure proper functioning of the wastewater treatment and batch treatment systems
- Assists in maintaining RO/DI water quality
- Storm water sampling as required
- Supports manufacturing and environmental, health and safety requests, as directed by manager.
- Keeps accurate records of daily activities and effluent quality
- Strictly complies with environmental and safety regulations, policies, and procedures
- Maintains a safe and clean work area
- Is on call and is available to come in early and/or stay late as requested by manager. Employee must provide a telephone number in which management can expect a call back within one hour
Essential Skills and Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of chemical handling, equipment maintenance, waste treatment operations, processes, equipment, machinery, and terminology
- Familiar with regulations relating to waste treatment and general chemical handling
- Knowledge of plumbing techniques and pump repair skills
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and interface with co-workers and supervisors
- Mathematical ability sufficient to add, subtract, multiply divide, and figure averages
- Good communication skills, as well as reading and writing abilities
- Flexible, organized, able to prioritize work and multi-task
- Able to work overtime to cover special projects, sick call in, vacations and weekend shifts
- Able to lift 50 lbs, stand/walk > 90% of time, wear an air purifying respirator, and work with hazardous chemicals, and within a fume and odor environment
Required Training:
- New Employee Safety Orientation
- ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Orientation
- On-the-Job Training (Routine tasks, special projects/duties, procedures)
- Initial 24 hour Hazardous Waste Operations (trained within 6 months of hire)
- Annual Refresher Hazardous Waste Operations (after initial Hazardous Waste Operations training)
- Forklift Safety and Driving Test (within 6 months of hire)
